“Queremos hacer a los grandes productores dueños de su transformación hacia una agricultura más productiva y de residuo cero”.

Antonio Domene ficha por Kimitec Group para ejercer las funciones de representación institucional y desarrollo estratégico de grandes cuentas de productores con los MAAVi Labs.

En el exigente contexto actual marcado por la gran distribución y la Unión Europea con su estrategia “De la Granja a la Mesa” (From Farm to Fork), mantener la productividad va a ser difícil si se cumplen con las exigencias:

• De las grandes cadenas y la distribución que son y serán mucho más restrictivas que la normativa en número de materias activas permitidas y LMRs.

• De la política europea que propone reducir de aquí a 2030 en un 50% el empleo de fitosanitarios y un 30% los fertilizantes químicos.

Cada día vemos como la Autoridad Europea prohíbe nuevas materias activas, ahí están los recientes casos de Mancozeb, Tiofanato y Chlorpyrifos, y en los próximos meses seremos testigos de cómo otros productos emblemáticos de la producción agrícola mundial se van prohibiendo en la Unión Europea y limitándose su uso en sus mercados.

Es lógico pensar que a las grandes multinacionales a quienes se les están retirando del mercado los pesticidas multisite, con los que todavía tenían varios años de trayectoria, tendrán menos capacidad de reacción para desarrollar nuevas soluciones que cumplan con el nuevo planteamiento de la UE para la multitud de plagas y enfermedades presentes, emergentes y minoritarias. Como consecuencia, los productores cada vez van a tener menos productos con los que combatir plagas y enfermedades que ya tenían controladas y aquellas que surgen nuevas y las que poco a poco regresan al campo.

Ante esta situación, y mientras la administración europea no apruebe una normativa específica para el registro de productos naturales, los agricultores se encuentran sin soluciones y en un callejón sin salida. Aunque se espera que la estrategia de la UE acelere la aprobación de una normativa específica para el registro de fitosanitarios, para cuando esto pase, habrá multitud de plagas y enfermedades sin una solución natural igual de eficaz que las que existían de síntesis química.

En este contexto, Kimitec propone una solución directa a los problemas de los productores: los MAAVi Labs.

Los MAAVi Labs son acuerdos estratégicos de largo recorrido para la investigación y desarrollo. “Trajes a medida” dirigidos a cooperativas, SAT y grandes productores que pivotan en torno a la gran temática de la mejora de la productividad sin residuos pero que se complementan con otros asuntos fundamentales para la agricultura como el aumento de la vida postcosecha, y la mejora de la calidad y de las cualidades organolépticas de frutas y verduras.

Conocedor del sector, de sus problemáticas y del tipo de soluciones que se necesitan para adaptarse a los grandes cambios que se avecinan, Antonio Domene es muy consciente de la exigencia de la gran distribución y del gran cambio que se avecina por las nuevas medidas que plantea la Unión Europea pero también del tremendo esfuerzo que tienen que hacer los productores en los próximos años para mantener sus productividades tras la constante disminución de pesticidas para el control de plagas.

Domene cuenta que el primer día que visitó MAAVi Innovation Center se enamoró del proyecto, de su dinámica de trabajo y de su centro de investigación ¡el mayor de Europa dedicado a la agricultura natural!

“Me convenció desde fuera, estando yo en CASI. Me pareció increíble que desde Almería una empresa tuviera una visión tan nítida de la problemática que va a vivir el sector en los próximos diez años y tuviera tan claro qué se necesita para formar parte de este cambio estructural que afronta el sector: Herramientas naturales igual de eficaces que el químico, cumpliendo a su vez con el residuo cero y manteniendo la productividad. Realmente pensé que eran el Tesla de la agricultura. Lo ideal sería que todo el mundo pudiera venir a ver lo que sucede aquí”, señala Domene.

Ya hay varios MAAVi Labs en marcha esperando el pistoletazo de salida en breve. Pero un MAAVi Lab no es un acuerdo de investigación en el que cualquiera puede participar. “Tenemos claro que este tipo de acuerdos están dirigidos a grandes productores que quieren anticiparse al cambio que se avecina y ser los primeros en llegar al residuo cero a la vez que mantienen o mejoran su productividad” apunta Félix.

No solo es un formato disruptivo, sino también significa el comienzo de un nuevo tipo de relación muy estrecha donde un gran productor amplía su I+D, a través de Kimitec, haciendo suyo un centro de 20 millones de euros y sirviéndose de éste para demostrar a la gran distribución su compromiso con el objetivo de una agricultura productiva y de residuo cero.

Antonio Domene joins Kimitec Group as Head of Institutional Relations and Strategic Accounts Development for the «MAAVi Labs».

In the current, challenging context, dictated by the wholesale distribution and the European Union’s ‘From Farm to Fork‘ strategy, a scenario is emerging that will make it difficult to sustain productivity if we cannot meet the requirements posed by:

• the wholesale market, which is far more restrictive than the current regulations regarding the number of active substances allowed and the level of MRLs.

• and the European Union’s strategy, aimed at reducing the use of plant protection products by 50% and the use of chemical fertilizers by 30 % by 2030.

We are seeing European authorities prohibiting active ingredients on a regular basis, most recently Mancozeb, Thiophanate and Chlorpyrifos, and, in the coming months, we will see how the European Union bans the use of other iconic agrochemicals, restricting them to their respective markets, as the current EU strategy also aims to influence the agendas of neighboring markets.

It seems reasonable to believe that large multinational corporations, whose multisite pesticides are being withdrawn from the market, would have little room to come up with new EU-compliant strategies to address a multitude of existing, emerging, and minor pests and diseases. As a result, growers will have fewer resources and tools to fight once-controlled pests and diseases, as well as those that are emerging or gradually making their way back into the fields.

In the midst of this situation, given that a specific regulation for the registration of natural products has yet to be established by the European administration, farmers are finding themselves at a standstill and without alternative choices. While the EU strategy is expected to speed up the approval of new regulations for phytosanitary products, by the time it is finalized, there will be a significant number of pests and diseases for which no natural solution is capable of offering the same efficacy as synthetic chemistry.

In view of this situation, Kimitec proposes the MAAVi Labs as a direct solution to aid growers with this problem.

The MAAVi Labs are strategic, customized, long-term R&D agreements directed at large growers, that pivot around the central theme of improving productivity without residues, while taking into account other fundamental topics in today’s agriculture, such as increasing shelf life and enhancing the quality and organoleptic properties of fruits and vegetables.

Domene says that the first day he visited MAAVi Innovation Center he fell in love with the project, its workplace dynamics, and its research facility, the largest in Europe dedicated to natural agriculture!

«I was won-over before I even got here when I was still at CASI. It seemed remarkable to me, that an Almería-based company had such a clear vision of the challenges that the industry will endure in the next ten years, and about what is needed to transition through the structural change facing the sector: Natural tools, with the same efficacy as synthetic chemistry, to maintain productivity while remaining residue-free. I really thought they were the Tesla of agriculture. Surely everyone should come and have this experience firsthand,» Domene says.

Several MAAVi Labs are underway, just waiting for the starting signal. However, the MAAVi Labs, are not open research agreement for just anyone. «To be clear, these types of agreements are aimed at large producers who want to anticipate to the change that is coming, and be the first to achieve a residue-free produce while maintaining or improving their productivity,» says Félix.

It is not only a disruptive model, it also signals the start of new and very close collaborations through which large growers can broaden their R&D through Kimitec, having access to a EUR 20 million center and demonstrate their commitment to residue-free and productive agriculture.
